Fremantle Octopus Pty Ltd
The business was originally started by the Cammilleri family and today employs the two original Directors, plus a staff of 10. Fremantle Octopus was spawned from the opportunity to gain one of seven developmental octopus licences which operated as an exemption to an already existing Open West Coast licence in designated fishing areas from Carnarvon to Esperance. The Company already owned an OWC licence and was operating a successful fishing boat and licence operation at the time.
Based on their past fishing industry experience and the evidence of growth in value of licences in the crayfishing and crabbing industries, the Directors identified the considerable commercial potential of the developmental octopus licence once it became a transferable asset. In order to achieve comparable rates of growth of other fishing licences, the Directors realised that a successful catch method and pot was an essential part of the business. Over the next few years, the Directors undertook extensive trial and error operations to determine the optimal fishing areas for octopus and how best to catch them. These research and development activities are part of a continuing program for the Company in achieving its long term goal to deliver a properly managed sustainable fishing resource for the benefit of both its own shareholders and the fishing industry in Western Australia.
The Company has now successfully structured a fishing program to optimise the catch method and has designed a pot that produces a consistently high level of catch. This has also allowed the Company to increase its quota of pots in the water to the maximum level allowed under the developmental licence leading to considerably increased catch volumes of octopus.
We have been a successful value add manufacturing business since 2000 and have recently released a new line of gourmet seafood products. C Food Gourmet is our new range that includes Marinated Sardines, Mediterranean Sardines, Garlic Prawns, Singapore Chilli Mussels and Abalone in Chilli, Ginger & Garlic as well as Marinated Octopus.
New products to the range include Steamed Octopus Hands and Steamed Octopus Hoods. Both of these products are ready to eat or they can be marinated and or used in various recipes .
